In nature, horses exist within a highly efficient biological system in which nothing functions in isolation. Food, water, movement, rest, environmental enrichment and social interaction are all naturally integrated, with movement connecting one part of the system to another. Horses are natural foragers, moving, searching, exploring and interacting with other horses and their environment. As they move across large areas, their manure is naturally dispersed.

In natural conditions, manure becomes part of a biological cycle rather than a stable-management workflow. Nutrients return to the soil and contribute to new growth.

When we confine the horse to a stable, we interrupt that system and limit their agency — their ability to make choices and influence what happens next.

Confinement creates a real problem, setting off a chain of counterproductive events. Horses are left with no choice other than to use their beds as their toilet. As horses move within the confined space of their stables, manure and urine are worked into clean straw or bedding. Every morning, grooms must work to separate the soiled bedding, load the heavy material into wheelbarrows, push it to the muck heap, empty it, return and repeat — stable after stable, day after day.

Confinement creates a continuous cycle of contamination, repetitive hard labour, bedding consumption, waste generation and resource-intensive waste management.

Most established yards cannot simply recreate natural living conditions. Established infrastructure, limited land and prohibitive costs make rebuilding entire facilities impractical. The opportunity is therefore not to replace nature, but to understand the principles that make natural systems work and bring as many of those principles as possible back into the stable. StableBuddy is designed to work within the infrastructure that already exists, using the horse’s intelligence and natural ability to learn.

Hours otherwise spent standing idle can become opportunities for purposeful learning, mental stimulation and constructive problem-solving.

StableBuddy is an interactive educational smart feeder that uses positive reinforcement to teach horses useful behaviours.

It begins with one simple, practical application: teaching the horse to use a designated toilet area. Through positive reinforcement, the horse learns that using one location produces a reward. The aim is to concentrate manure in one area, reducing how much is spread through clean bedding as the horse moves around the stable. This changes the system at its source.

The horse becomes an intelligent participant in their own care. By addressing the source of contamination, StableBuddy is being developed to create a cleaner, more efficient stable with less repetitive work and less waste.
