THE PROBLEM WE SAW
A $300 billion industry still stuck in the Agricultural Age.
The global equestrian industry has an estimated annual economic impact of $300 billion—yet many of its systems remain rooted in thinking inherited from the Agricultural Age. We are trying to build a modern future on outdated foundations.
Despite this enormous scale, much of horse training, care and stable management still relies on systems designed to contain the horse’s body and control their movement—not engage their intelligence. Not because horses lack intelligence, but because the systems surrounding them were never designed to recognise or use it.

Confinement runs through almost every part of the equestrian industry.
In the arena, we confine the horse’s body in an attempt to control their mind. The horse is contained between the bit, the reins, the rider’s legs and sometimes the spurs.
In the stable, we confine the horse’s natural behaviour. The horse loses the freedom to choose to interact, move, graze, forage or explore—and has no choice but to use their bed as a toilet.
Within the industry, we confine knowledge. Valuable experience remains trapped within individual people and organisations. When that knowledge is not recorded and shared, lessons are lost, mistakes are repeated and horses pay the price.
The forms of confinement differ, but the thinking behind them is the same: we restrict what we have not learned to understand.
WHAT MUST CHANGE?
We inherited the box.We do not have toinherit the thinking.
The equestrian world is increasingly concerned about its social licence to operate—society’s continued acceptance of the use of horses in sport.
The concern became serious enough for the FEI to establish an independent Equine Ethics and Wellbeing Commission. Research has identified horse welfare, transparency and trust as central to the industry’s future. In the FEI’s public survey, 67% of respondents did not believe horses enjoyed being used in sport.
People may not have the technical language to explain what concerns them. They may not understand biomechanics, learning theory or equine physiology.
But they can sense a contradiction.
The industry speaks about partnership while much of its infrastructure is built around control. It calls the horse an athlete while measuring the competition result more carefully than the horse’s response to producing it. It speaks about welfare while horses spend long periods in stables standing and waiting. It celebrates horsemanship while valuable knowledge remains inaccessible, undocumented or guarded as personal territory.
Something about this feels wrong—because something about it is wrong.
The public is not necessarily rejecting horses or equestrian sport. It is questioning the gap between what the industry says and what the horse appears to experience.
That gap cannot be closed through better marketing. It can only be closed through better evidence—and better practice.
